Rugs on Walls

Hanging a rug on the wall... Have you ever thought about it? As an interior designer myself, the idea of hanging a rug on a wall shouldn't have seemed so alien to me. I've seen crazier things in my time!

Wall rugs are an exciting trend in interior design at the moment. These textile wall hangings give any room a touch of warmth, texture and style.

Unlike regular rugs or wall art, wall rugs encompass hand-crafted pieces that hang like paintings on your walls. From modern geometric patterns to natural shapes to abstract fiber artworks, there are endless design options to express your personal taste.

To find out how to hang up your wall rugs, check out my 5 methods to hang a rug on a wall.

Meet the Designers

In this guide, I'll introduce you to some of the creative designers and brands pushing this textile art form forward...

Pan Cukierek

Monika is the talent behind Pan Cukierek, exploring all manners of fiber art, with a focus on punch needle rug hooking.

She still recalls that winter night when she first discovered the punch needle technique - she was so enthralled she could hardly sleep.

Previously dabbling in loom weaving and abstract painting, discovering punch needle gave Monika the immediate sense that she found her ideal medium to “paint” with yarn.

She feels fortunate to showcase her textile artwork while instructing others in punch needle through beginner-friendly kits and patterns.

Monika welcomes custom collaborations – clients can message her directly to co-create one-of-a-kind pieces.

Monika’s works are characterized by texture, color and abstract elements. Her wall rug piece, Pan Cukierek’s TUNDRA, is characteristic of Monika’s style.

TUNDRA is an abstract, textured fiber wall art in a medley of beige, yellow and burgundy tones.

Rosa Rauscher

Rosa Rauscher is an art and design studio specializing in hand-tufted wool carpets for walls and floors. Their focus is on crafting long-lasting, cozy collector’s items all made of pure wool.

In 2021, Corina and Dirk launched Rosa Rauscher as a small family business.

Corina has a background in landscape design and retail, while Dirk is a freelance motion graphic designer and art director

Their shared passion for color, shape and textures guides their collaboration in handmaking unique wool pieces from their Erfurt-based studio.

Together, and with a sense for sustainability and durable things, the two create handmade, unique pieces for walls and floors.

Rosa Rauscher rugs and wall art feature vibrant hues, organic forms and pattern mixing. Their irregularly shaped Rug 6 and RUG no. 4 embody their bold aesthetic by fusing shades like azure blue with neutrals and pastels.

Following a more traditional shape, RUG no. 2 artfully blends fuchsia wool with vivid touches of blue, beige and pink.

Studio Mirte

Studio Mirte is a design studio based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Combining playful designs with textiles, Mirte makes lively, bright pieces of art for your home.

Studio Mirte emerged from the creative explorations of its founder. Mirte Verhoeven founded the studio in 2020, after accidentally stumbling from punch needle embroidery into a passion for rug tufting.

Despite Mirte’s background in graphic design, her innate interest in textiles led her to embrace rug tufting for translating prints and patterns into tangible wall art and woven rugs.

She personally crafts each piece start-to-finish using a hand-operated tufting gun, sculpting with wool like a tactile canvas.

Mirte’s tufted wall art pieces, tufted in cut and loop pile with 100% wool, meshes textures, colors and patterns to skillfully and delicately bring art into your space.

The pieces are mounted in a hardwood frame and feature a wire hanging system in the back.

The studio also produces one-of-a-kind rugs featuring geometric patterns, bold colors and tactfully irregular corners.

Signature creations include geometric and nature-inspired wall hangings mounted on hardwood, as well as vivid hand-tufted wool rugs with unique dimensions.

Mirte infuses every design with colors and textures that bring artful energy into any environment.
