What Should I Know About Product Dimensions?

Handcrafted rugs may slightly vary in size, typically within a range of plus or minus 3 inches from the specified dimensions.

This variation is a normal characteristic of individually woven handmade rugs and is not considered a manufacturer's defect.

Is Shedding A Defect?

Shedding is a common occurrence in all hand-made rugs and those crafted with wool. This shedding is a natural trait and not considered a defect from the manufacturer. While it may be initially noticeable, shedding decreases over time and typically ceases altogether. Regular and frequent vacuuming can aid in managing shedding.

Rug Care and Maintenance

How Do I Wash and Maintain My Rug?

Washing and maintenance instructions will vary based on your specific rug type, model, brand, and composition amongst others. Please use the information below as a general guide.

Flatweave Wool Rugs:

Flatweave wool rugs are designed without a pile, with a “flat” surface. According to rug expert Ben Hyman, a wool rugs natural oils (called lanolin) are its first line of defense in preventing stains from settling into the fibers.

If a spill occurs, it's best to blot the affected area with a clean cloth or paper towel until dry, without using any cleaning solutions. Applying liquids to a flatweave rug can worsen stains, making them more challenging to remove and potentially spreading them. If the stain persists, seeking advice from a specialist promptly is recommended.

Shag Rugs:

Shag rugs are notorious for their long pile and dramatic fuzz. This deep pile is prone to catching crumbs, dirt, and hair. To keep your shag rug in top condition, shake and vacuum it regularly – about once a week. You can also use a carpet rake to brush through the fibers and remove tangles.

When dealing with stains on a shag rug, act promptly with spot treating, focusing on the affected area directly. Blot spills and remove solids by gently picking them up or using a butter knife edge for dried spots. Dab a small amount of mild detergent on a damp cloth and gently dab at the stain without scrubbing. Gently rinse the area with a clean, damp cloth once the stain is removed and allow the rug to dry.

Avoid deep cleaning a shag rug at home; instead, use dry carpet shampoo granules following the manufacturer's instructions. For sheepskin rugs, apply dry carpet shampoo, let it sit, then vacuum thoroughly to remove residue.

Jute Rugs:

Conventional wet cleaning methods can harm the fibers of a jute rug irreversibly. According to rug specialists, dry cleaning compounds like Capture’s all-in-one solution are preferred.

Start by vacuuming the rug thoroughly using a brush attachment to eliminate surface dirt, then apply pre-stain solutions sparingly on set-in stains after testing on a small area. Afterward, gently brush a dry compound into the rug's fibers, leaving it to sit for the recommended time before vacuuming it away.

When tackling fresh spills, resist using water as it could lead to staining and discoloration. Instead, opt for a mild detergent and a damp cloth for spot treatment, ensuring thorough drying without direct sunlight or heat exposure to prevent damage to the rug's fibers.

To eliminate odors absorbed by your jute rugs, sprinkle baking soda liberally over the surface. Let it sit overnight to absorb lingering smells, then vacuum thoroughly the next day. For a comprehensive refresh, repeat the process on the rug's other side.

Cowhide Rugs:

Vacuum or shake regularly to remove loose debris and dust easily. Use a hard plastic brush to keep the rug soft and dirt-free. Spills like tea or coffee rarely seep deep into the rug.

For stains, use a water and shampoo mix for minor ones and specific treatments like eucalyptus oil for grease stains. Act swiftly with liquid spills - blot, then treat with a gentle shampoo mix and wipe off residue.

Tufted Rugs:

Regular vacuuming is key. Use a vacuum with the beater bar off to avoid damaging the fibers. Opt for low suction and thorough passes to clear dust and dirt. For stains, gently scrape dry ones and blot wet ones with lukewarm water and a cloth. Avoid oversaturating to protect the rug's binding. Use a pH-neutral, bleach-free cleaner for stubborn stains. When in doubt, seek professional cleaning - skip dry-cleaning methods to maintain the rug's quality.

Note: Avoid using fabric softener or bleach on most rugs. For tufted rugs, consider adding white vinegar to neutralize pet odors. Always refer to washing machine size guide for specifics on larger rugs.
