Autumn Winter 2023 rug trends

As we’re in the process of embracing the colder season, we’ve explored and narrowed down the latest Autumn Winter 2023 rug trends together with Home Décor content creator and interior decorator, Denisa Pop. With beautiful airy designs and a great eye for mindful and natural interiors, Denisa shares unique spaces, home renovations as well as DIY tips & tricks on her Sculpture Your Home socials.

Together with Denisa, explore which rug patterns, shapes and hues will define the AW23 Trends and how can they be styled in your home.

Hi Denisa. Before we dive into trends, could you give a brief introduction about yourself and your work for those who may not be familiar with you?

My name is Denisa Pop. I'm 30 years old and I’m a content creator - I love sharing interior styling/interior tips and home décor across my social media platforms. I also help people decorate their homes.

In the 2023 Spring/Summer trends, many interior design sources named relaxed coastal style, earthy tones and natural materials as gaining a lot of attention. How do you see interior design trends shifting in the Autumn/Winter of 2023? What styles and elements will be the most prominent among designers and homeowners/renters?

Whilst neutral materials and earthy tones remain a huge trend in the interior design industry, we’re starting to see a shift toward bolder choices and the desire to introduce more bold and loud patterns as well as color. I think the most prominent colors that will trend this Autumn/Winter are warm browns, ochre and burgundy.

Speaking of rugs as an important home décor piece, are there any new rug elements, such as natural fiber textures, unusual shapes or geometric patterns, that you anticipate being especially welcomed and loved this autumn and winter?

Yes, definitely! We will notice more non-traditional rugs, coming in different geometric shapes: such as curved, oval and pond shapes. These types of rugs are fabulous and solve a lot of furniture arrangement issues, such as:

Accommodating unusual shaped furniture, like curved sofas that we all love. Irregular rugs can adapt better to their contours, making for a more harmonious arrangement.

Besides that, we often use area rugs to define different parts of a room. However, in smaller spaces sometimes we encounter obstacles, such as walls or small walkways that limit the size of the rug we can use.

Choosing a smaller rug in these situations can make a room feel even more cramped. Instead, consider an irregular shaped rug as the solution. These unique shapes work around challenging arrangements, solving the space issue while adding a stylish touch to your décor.

In situations where you need more than two area rugs, introducing another conventional one can feel overwhelming. For example, let’s say you want to create an office area within your living/dining space. Adding yet another typical area rug might make the transition between these areas feel disconnected. However, opting for a distinctive irregular rug can elegantly bridge the gap, ensuring a smoother flow between different zones in your space.

Which rug trends are definitely staying, and which ones have to go?

The neutral beige rugs stand as a perennial favourite among homeowners and for a good reason. Its timeless charm owes much to the versatility of neutral colours, capable of harmonizing with any décor style. When considering an investment in a rug, longevity is key. Thus, neutral rugs with enduring appeal assure that they withstand the test of time.

Furthermore, the light hue of such a rug can impart a sense of spaciousness and airiness to your living spaces, making them feel larger and more inviting. However, it's essential to bear in mind that these rugs demand a bit more care and attention in terms of maintenance.

On the other hand, rugs that definitely need to go are shiny rugs and Jute rugs, which we see everywhere, are slowly losing their interest.

Are there any rug colors making their way to AW23 collections that we will unavoidably see everywhere, from Ikea, Jysk, Wayfair to Rugs Direct, Ruggable and Crate & Barrel?

We can certainly anticipate the emergence of certain rug colors that will undoubtedly dominate the Autumn and Winter collections across popular retailers, like Ikea, Jysk, Wayfair, Rugs Direct, Ruggable and Crate & Barrel.

Warm browns, earthy greens, and the ever-inviting ochre tones are poised to take center stage. These hues introduce a subtle yet impactful dimension to neutral interiors, infusing them with added interest and creating an inviting sense of coziness.

Expect to encounter these captivating colors across a wide range of rug offerings this season. You can style these color rugs with neutral furniture, whether it's in a bedroom or dining space, for a harmonious and inviting ambiance.

Rug layering, irregular rug shapes and different texture-mixing have gained a lot of attention this Spring and Summer. How will that change in the colder season?

As I mentioned earlier, I believe irregular shaped rugs will massively take over and the market demand will rise. Irregular shaped rugs create a softer transition from the rug area into the other zones or between divided open space areas with the help of rugs. Additionally, they create a lot of visual interest. I personally love the animal-shaped rugs, they bring so much fun to a kid's room.

Last but not least, what is your personal most awaited rug trend for the upcoming AW23 season that you would like to share with our readers?

My personal most awaited rug trend for the upcoming AW23 season is a statement rug. An obvious choice with something unexpected in pattern and shape, and definitely ochre color rugs.
