DMC: AI Shopping Assistant Rug Privacy Policy
Last updated: August 17, 2026
This Privacy Policy applies specifically to DMC: AI Shopping Assistant Rug (the “App”), a Shopify app operated by DressMyCrib. It explains how information is processed when a Shopify merchant installs or uses the App and when a shopper uses the App on a merchant's storefront.
This policy supplements the general DressMyCrib website privacy policy. You can review the general website policy at dressmycrib.com/privacy-policy.
1. Information we process
Shopify merchant and store information
When a merchant installs or uses the App, we process information necessary to provide the service. This may include:
- the Shopify store domain and store identifier;
- product catalog information;
- product titles, variants, dimensions, prices, availability, and images;
- DMC-specific product setup and catalog-preparation information;
- App configuration and merchant settings;
- subscription plan and monthly room-upload usage information.
The current version of the App does not require Shopify customer, order, payment, or checkout data to provide its core functionality.
Shopper room photos
When a shopper chooses to upload a room photo, the photo is transmitted to DMC's AI processing infrastructure so that the App can analyze the room, recommend suitable rugs from the merchant's catalog, and provide room-visualization and related features.
Room photos can contain personal information. For example, a photo may unintentionally show people, family photographs, personal possessions, documents, addresses, screens, or other identifying details. Shoppers should avoid uploading room photos that contain sensitive or unnecessary personal information.
Room photos may be processed for purposes including:
- analyzing room characteristics relevant to rug recommendations;
- finding suitable rugs from the merchant's catalog;
- displaying a selected rug in the shopper's room;
- supporting rug placement, scale, size selection, and room calibration;
- providing related visualization and augmented-reality functionality.
Room-upload fingerprints and monthly allowance
The App uses a cryptographic SHA-256 fingerprint of an uploaded room photo to support monthly usage accounting and duplicate-upload detection. This allows an identical room photo to be recognized without storing the photo itself in the monthly usage record.
The Shopify App's monthly usage records store the fingerprint and related technical metadata rather than the room image itself. The original room image is processed by DMC systems and may be temporarily cached where necessary to complete the requested room analysis, visualization, or active processing session.
Usage and analytics information
The App collects limited usage information so merchants can understand how shoppers use the assistant and so we can operate and improve the service. Depending on the shopper's privacy settings, this may include events such as:
- assistant viewed;
- room analysis completed or failed;
- new room upload counted;
- recommendations shown;
- filters used and additional recommendations loaded;
- rug visualization opened or adjusted;
- rug size changed;
- room scale calibrated;
- AR opened;
- product clicked.
Where Shopify's Customer Privacy API is available, the App checks whether analytics processing is allowed before storing storefront analytics identifiers. DMC analytics use randomly generated visitor and browser-session identifiers and are designed not to store shopper names, email addresses, Shopify customer IDs, room images, or room-image fingerprints in the analytics event table.
Technical information
We may process technical information needed to operate, secure, and troubleshoot the App, such as request timestamps, application/session identifiers, store domain, diagnostic information, browser or device information, and error logs.
2. How we use information
We use the information described above to:
- provide AI-powered rug recommendations;
- process shopper room photos;
- provide in-room rug visualization and AR features;
- analyze and prepare a merchant's rug catalog;
- identify suitable top-down rug images and prepare cutouts when needed;
- allow merchants to review or correct rug images and dimensions manually;
- apply subscription and monthly room-upload limits;
- prevent identical room uploads from consuming additional monthly allowance;
- provide merchant analytics about App usage and engagement;
- maintain, troubleshoot, secure, and improve the App;
- prevent abuse, fraud, and security incidents;
- comply with applicable legal obligations.
We do not sell shopper room photos or personal information. Room photos are not used for third-party behavioral advertising.
3. Shopify product information
DMC reads product information from the merchant's Shopify catalog so the App can understand which rugs are available and recommend suitable products to shoppers.
The App may store DMC-specific product configuration information used by the recommendation system, such as selected rug imagery, extracted rug characteristics, dimensions, catalog eligibility, and merchant review decisions.
The App is not designed to change a merchant's product prices, inventory quantities, customer orders, or payment information as part of its normal operation.
4. How information is shared
We share or transmit information only where reasonably necessary to provide, host, secure, and maintain the App. This can include processing by:
- Shopify, as the ecommerce platform on which the App operates;
- hosting and cloud-infrastructure providers;
- AI and image-processing infrastructure used for room and rug processing;
- security, monitoring, logging, and technical service providers.
We may also disclose information where required by law, regulation, court order, or a valid legal process.
5. Data retention and deletion
We retain information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including providing the App, maintaining security and usage records, complying with legal obligations, and resolving disputes.
- Merchant configuration and catalog information may be retained while the App remains installed or while needed to provide the service.
- Room-upload usage records and cryptographic fingerprints may be retained for usage, quota, duplicate-detection, security, and operational purposes.
- Analytics events may be retained to provide merchant analytics and evaluate service usage.
- Room images are retained or cached only for as long as reasonably necessary to perform the requested processing, deliver the feature, maintain service reliability, or meet applicable legal requirements.
When Shopify sends an applicable mandatory privacy request, including store or customer deletion requests, DMC processes the request through Shopify's privacy-compliance mechanisms and deletes or anonymizes applicable information as required.
6. Cookies and browser storage
The App may use browser local storage or session storage to support functionality such as anonymous visitor/session identifiers, temporary assistant state, and attribution between assistant interactions and product clicks. Analytics-related storage is used in accordance with applicable Shopify Customer Privacy settings where available.
7. Legal bases for processing
Where the GDPR or similar privacy legislation applies, personal data may be processed where necessary to provide the requested service, perform contractual obligations to the merchant, operate and secure the App based on legitimate interests, comply with legal obligations, or on the basis of consent where consent is required.
Depending on the circumstances, the Shopify merchant may act as the primary party determining why shopper data is processed on its storefront, while DMC processes data as necessary to provide the App's functionality.
8. Your privacy rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights relating to your personal information, including rights to request access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, or data portability, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.
If you are a shopper using DMC on a merchant's Shopify store, you may first contact that merchant regarding your request. You may also contact DressMyCrib directly using the details below.
9. International data transfers
DMC and its service providers may process information in countries other than the country in which the merchant or shopper is located. Where required by applicable law, appropriate safeguards are used for international transfers of personal data.
10. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures intended to protect information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure. No internet transmission or storage system can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
11. Children
DMC is a shopping technology service and is not designed specifically for children. Shoppers should not intentionally upload room photos containing identifiable children or other sensitive personal information unless they have an appropriate lawful basis and authority to do so.
12. Changes to this Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy when our service, technology, legal obligations, or privacy practices change. The latest version will be published on this page with an updated effective date.
