How to Determine Area of a Rug?

Have you ever wondered what impact the right size of a rug has on your home interior? While working with clients, I have noticed that it is one of the most important aspects that helps to highlight the advantages of a room, provide warmth and create an aesthetically harmonious space. If the rug is too small, the room looks unfinished, and if it is too large, it overshadows other important details. In this article, I will briefly discuss the basic principles that will help you choose the right size of a rug and create a stylish and balanced environment for your home.

Why am I interested in its area when choosing a rug?

When designing a space, it has become customary to first measure how much space a rug will take up - this makes it much easier to coordinate colors, furniture and other interior elements. Recently, I have really liked augmented reality (AR) tools, because they allow you to see in real time how the rug will fit in one's home.

What is the area of a rug?

When I talk about the area of a rug, I mean the total floor space that the rug will cover. This dimension has a big impact on the overall look and functionality of the room.

Rectangular or Square Rug

Formula: Area = Length × Width

Example (in feet): 8 ft × 10 ft = 80 ft²

Example (in meters): 2.44 m × 3.05 m = 7.44 m²

When I choose the size of a rectangular or square rug, I always consider how much space remains around the furniture so that the space looks solid and proportional.

Round Rug

Formula: Area = π × r²

Example: If the diameter of a round rug is 6 feet (about 183 cm), the radius is 3 feet (about 91.5 cm). π × 3² ≈ 3.14 × 9 = 28.26 ft²

Round rugs, in my opinion, can give a feeling of softness and exclusivity, but then I definitely appreciate the center - I often compose it around a coffee table or other bright interior accent.

How I Measure Rugs

I always start with the simplest tools, a tape measure, because it allows me to accurately determine the size of the rug.

For rectangular rugs:

• I measure the longest side (length).
• I measure the shortest side (width).
• By multiplying the length and width values, I get the area of the rug.

For round rugs:

• I measure the greatest distance through the center of the rug (diameter).
• By dividing the diameter in half, I get the radius.
• I calculate the area using the formula π×r2\pi \times r^2π×r2
